French Horse Exports

France, the land of cheese, wine, and…..fantastic well-bred show jumpers! Over 6 years ago, myself (Katherine McMahon) and Alizé Jeandon decided to create French Horse Exports, a horse broker firm focused on finding dream horses in France for predominantly North American clients. What started out as an accidental sale of a hunter horse to California has turned into a full-blown business where we have successfully brokered over 150 horses to the United States and Canada.

I am sure that many of you have heard of trainers and riders shopping in Holland, Germany, The UK, and even Belgium. But what is the draw to France? The major breed in France is the Selle Francais, which can be best described as a lighter jumper type. They make excellent mounts in all rings and were very successful in the 2016 Olympics. France focuses on a young horse program starting at 3 years old and moving through 7-year-olds, which aims to develop each and every horse into their full potential.

Our company, French Horse Exports, helps clients find the right horse in France for their needs be it a 1m adult jumper to a Derby horse to a GP prospect. We currently have a website, as well as ads on ProEquest, Instagram, and a Facebook Page. Once a client finds a horse that catches their eye, we will narrow down prospects for them depending on their criteria and budget. The majority of our clients come to France to try the horses in the beautiful location of Haras National Saint Lo where our current barn is. We will bring many of the horses to be tried to this location, as it is a state of the art facility where the clients can see the horse in a new environment with all types of jumps including open water for those clients looking for those GP horses! We also put a little French flair into these trips for clients, as visiting France is a cultural experience as well. Clients will experience French cuisine, delicious wine if interested, and even a quick trip to one of the D day beaches if we are seeing a horse in the area. Some clients even get to enjoy a view of the famous Mont Saint Michel from the back of a horse. You can get more details about our horse tours here.

After finding that horse that you fall in love with, we take care of everything from A to Z. After a price is negotiated on and the horse tests negative for Piroplasmosis (necessary for import to the USA and Canada), we will proceed to the vetting. We have several trusted vets we work with that will send your vet the x rays and all videos of lameness tests. We then will translate the report and make sure that everything is in order before we proceed to finalize the transaction. Our shippers work with clients to get them the best quotes, as we all understand that importing a horse adds on costs not seen when purchasing a horse in the United States. However, we still find that when you look for the same quality of horse in France, the price is more often than not still cheaper with import. This is an incentive for those looking for quality resale horses.

Some of the horses we have sold have gone on to be derby winners, GP winners, solid JR/AO mounts, as well as many resales that are now located all over the USA. We absolutely love seeing where these horses have all gone and getting updates of what they are up to these days. If there is one thing we can say about us is that we honestly represent quality horses and work extremely hard to find that perfect partner for you to go out there and not only win all the blues you can but have a blast doing it.
